Iowa Vein Center gives family a “Leg Up”
June 20, 2007
The clinical and administrative staff of the Iowa Vein Center will trade their surgical instruments for construction tools on Thursday, June 21, at the Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity home under construction at 1818 11th Street in Des Moines. “This is a new activity for us, but a very worthy one,” says Iowa Vein Center Medical Director J.A. Olivencia, M.D. “Habitat for Humanity refers to their programs as a “hand up, not a hand out” so we thought it was appropriate for us to help give a “leg up” to the family that will soon call this house a home.” Clinic staff will be decked out in surgical scrubs for the build to visually demonstrate the connection between physical health and emotional well-being. “Through our work with patients seeking both medical and cosmetic procedures, we are acutely aware of how improving oneself can increase personal self-esteem and confidence,” Olivencia says. “By helping this family to have a home of their own of which they can be proud, we hope there will be a positive effect on how they feel about themselves and their own personal ability to continue to move in a positive direction in life.” Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity partners with the community and with God's people in need to build hope and a greater Des Moines. In partnership we provide decent and affordable homeownership for qualified low-income families. We are a uniquely local and tangible philanthropy welcoming all to join in building a better community. For more information, visit www.gdmhabitat.org.
