When to Call the Iowa Vein Center
If you have varicose veins and experience any of the following symptoms, you should talk to your family doctor or contact the Iowa Vein Center for an appointment – in most cases, no referral is necessary:
- Your leg suddenly becomes swollen and painful. You might have a blood clot in a deep vein, which can be serious and may need prompt attention.
- The skin over a varicose vein begins to bleed. The skin is often thin and can bleed heavily. If this happens, elevate your leg and apply pressure directly to the vein to stop the bleeding.
- Your leg has a tender lump or spot in the vein. This could be a clot or inflammation in a vein just under the skin. While often not dangerous, it should be checked out.
- You develop an open sore (ulcer).
- Your varicose vein symptoms don’t improve with home treatment. Or if there are symptoms you are concerned about.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
The following home treatments can relieve symptoms and slow down the progress of your varicose veins: • Wear compression stockings to improve circulation.
- Avoid long periods of sitting and standing.
- Exercise and control your weight. Walking, swimming, and bicycling are great ways to improve blood circulation in your legs.
- If you cut or scratch the skin over a vein, it may bleed heavily. Elevate your leg and apply firm pressure with a clean bandage for a full 20-30 minutes. If you can’t get it stopped within 45 minutes, go to an emergency room.
